For the Month of October, Seattle Creative Arts Center Presents Artist Greg Thornton, Creator of Black Iconic T-Shirts

 BLACK ICONIC FIGURES
by GREG THORNTON

Greg Thornton

Artist, Greg Thornton, is a local Ballard/Crown Hill artist.  He is the owner of Black Iconic T-Shirts, a t-shirt line inspired by his own history as a black artist and by the icons he has enjoyed and researched for as long as he can remember.

Greg has been drawing since he could hold a crayon.  His mother, Grace Clayton, soon recognized Greg’s talent.  Because Greg grew up in a household of limited means, art classes and high-end art supplies were not available, so Ms. Clayton encouraged Greg to practice his drawing skills by mimicking the comic strips in the newspaper each day.

In forming Black Iconic T-shirts, Greg created pieces of artwork of Black iconic figures that are important to Black history.  Greg then created a street motif “Hello My Name Is” name tag for each person.  The tag for each person starts with "Hello my name is . . . "  and then provides information about the historical figure, such as his or her birth name, date and place of birth, date of death (if deceased), and a few sentences about the person's "claim to fame."

Black Iconic T-shirts sells custom-made t-shirts with the image of the person on the front of the t-shirt and the informational name tag on the back of the t-shirt.  Greg simply hopes that the viewer is inspired enough by the historical information that he or she delves deeper into these and other individual’s lives and accomplishments.

Greg hopes you are inspired to check out www.blackiconictshirts.com to see the rest of his artwork.

Be Inspired by Nature Through the Eyes of Paper Cutout & Gouache Artist Josephine E. Rice, Venue's Artist for October

“Creating art brings great joy and satisfaction to me,” admits Josephine E. Rice, Venue’s featured artist for October. “And I wish this feeling for my viewers.”

Fort Caramel

With inspiration from nature, specifically the Pacific Northwest's lush wildlife - along with spontaneous shapes - Josie mixes and layers paper cutouts until the feeling is just right. Through trial and error, a fitting story unfolds, each piece exaggerated with saturated gouache color. The final step is smoothing the form with black ink lines. In awe of the infinite combinations, she arrives on just one, achieving at last an idealistic wish and hope for that perfect moment of contentment.

In October, Annie's Art & Frame is Showing the Paintings of Mike Dipetrillo

Mike likes painting funny things. And as an artist, he doesn’t think funny has to be separate from beautiful. A lot of his art takes on concepts that can be paradoxical when combined: funny, cute, gross, weird, and beautiful.

Ooze

His paintings reflect his obsessions: dinosaurs, stripes, mythology, geek culture, and gross-out humor. He enjoys the reactions people have to his paintings. He has been compared to everyone from Dali to Tim Burton. He says that seeing what other people think of his paintings is as much fun as making the paintings themselves.

Capricorn

Mike is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, and has also attended Cornish College of the Arts. He’s been practicing art since he was but a tiny child. He works primarily with acrylics, and occasionally in digital media. Also, when he doesn’t know what to draw, he draws dragons.
You can keep up with his work at www.mikeatron.com

Hummingbird

Mark Siano creates haunting and spare images of nature, where something is always hidden and mysterious, through an endless array of weaving and twisting silhouettes. Bold and highly stylized images of tree branches, crows, nests, bramble, waterways, and flowers reflect Mark's interest in exploring the dense, complicated, and entangled areas of nature. Mark works primarily with ink and canvas and uses classic poster design techniques from the Art Nouveau era to frame and illustrate a large variety of projects. www.marksianoartwork.blogspot.com

October ArtWalk Artist: Karen Mataya

Painter Karen Mataya will be featured at Starbucks this October. Her oil paintings feature a series of tranquil tropical ocean scenes. Such gorgeous images to meditate on as the weather turns colder in Seattle.

My desire to be at the beach is represented in my paintings. I like the warmth of the tropics and put myself in that setting while I paint.

October ArtWalk Artist: Megan Noel

For the month of October, Miro Tea is featuring local artist Meghan Noel. Ms. Noel is a painter, illustrator, & textile and mixed media artist working in the Northwest.

In recent years she has chosen to focus more on her  intricate painting and illustrations. Her paintings and illustrations range from dreamy and surreal to delicate and whimsical. She seeks not to create masterpieces to grace the walls of museums, but rather to create smaller more intimate works to fit into the lives of readers and writers, poets and dreamers, mother, fathers, and everyday folk.

Her website is : www.megannoel.com.
